University Student Welfare and Engagement Committee Meeting (USWEC)
1. Effectiveness of online classes
- A recent survey showed that while students are satisfied with the balance of online and physical classes, the effectiveness of online learning needs improvement, and the University is addressing this through lecturer training and expanded facilities in the new building, noting that online classes are not due to space limitations but are used to better manage and monitor large student groups.
2. Unclear guideline on the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in assignments and assessments
- Concerns were raised regarding unclear guidelines on AI usage in assignments, particularly around Turnitin’s AI detection; Management acknowledged the issue, emphasising that results should be interpreted with human discretion and that students have the right to seek clarification, while SUSC proposed a standardised system to ensure all students can consistently access their AI detection results when submitting assignments.
3. MyCampus App and Whizzy App Update
- Feedback from students highlights issues with the effectiveness of the MyCampus app. The issue has been escalated to IT Services for review and improvement, while Management has also requested further student feedback on the usefulness of the Whizzy app for a general evaluation, and SUSC is currently conducting a survey to gather student feedback. We strongly encourage all students to fill in the form here:
4. Working opportunities for International Students
- Survey findings indicate that international students face limited working opportunities, which leads to financial stress. Results also showed strong interest in the "International Student Ambassador Programme", an initiative aimed at creating working opportunities for international students within regulatory limits, with proposed support including recognition awards, stipends, fee rebates, or vouchers. Management has expressed openness to exploring these options in collaboration with relevant departments, and SUSC together with SISA is currently preparing a proposal for further discussion.
5. Request to record physical classes
- This suggestion was rejected because:
- In the long run, fewer students will show up for classes
- Classroom learning experience will not the same as recorded tutorial
- Standard equipment (cameras on certain places at the classrooms, camera quality, microphone) will be required
