Professor Low Teck Yew

Professor Low Teck Yew brings over two decades of research experience in proteomics, biological mass spectrometry, and proteogenomics. He is internationally recognized for his high-impact publications, invited talks at global conferences, and leadership roles in prominent scientific organizations. Through active involvement in interdisciplinary projects and a strong international network, he contributes significantly to global proteomics initiatives. Beyond his research, Professor Low is a passionate mentor and educator who fosters critical thinking and intellectual curiosity through innovative teaching methods. His leadership in AOHUPO and HUPO plays a key role in identifying and nurturing the next generation of international research talent.

Professor Chew Jactty

Professor Dr Jactty Chew obtained her BSc (Hons) in Biotechnology from Monash University, Malaysia before pursuing her PhD in Dentistry at the University of Adelaide, Australia. Her postgraduate project investigated the biofilm formation of an oral pathogen, Fusobacterium nucleatum, implicated in periodontal diseases. Upon completion, she worked as an Associate Lecturer in the School of Dentistry at the University of Adelaide. She joined ������in 2012 as a Lecturer and held the BSc (Hons) Medical Biotechnology Programme Chair position until 2015. Her primary research interest areas include antibiotic resistance, bacterial pathogenesis, antibacterial agents and the Malayan sun bear population genetics. She has received various research grants from different funding agencies including the Australian Dental Research Association, ������Internal Grant Scheme and the International Bear Association. She works closely with infectious disease physicians, paediatricians and sun bear conservation experts on her research projects. At the moment, she is supervising both undergraduate and postgraduate students.

Associate Professor Dr Ser Hooi Leng

Associate Professor Dr Ser Hooi Leng is currently a Lecturer at the Department of Biomedical Sciences, Sunway University. She completed her Bachelor of Science (Molecular Biology & Biomedical Science) and Bachelor of Forensics (Forensic Biology) degrees at Murdoch University, Australia in 2012. Upon completing her undergraduate studies, she successfully secured a Summer Research Scholarship at the same university and had her first “taste” of research life, which piqued her interest in pursuing a career in biomedical science research. After returning to Malaysia, she began her postgraduate studies at Monash University. Her PhD project involves identifying novel Streptomyces species from mangrove forests and bioactivity screening of their secondary metabolites. Her research on the novel strain “Streptomyces malaysiense” with potent antioxidant and anticancer activities has garnered attention from the scientific community and she received TTLBF-YSPSAH Excellent Scientific Paper Award in 2016.

Her interest in microbiology research allows her to delve deeper into the intriguing world of bacteria, particularly in terms of understanding the relationship between microbes and human diseases. While microbes can be found practically everywhere, not all of them are harmful to humans. They could be employed as biomarkers for specific diseases and ailments, as well as pharmaceutical targets in treatments and prevention strategies. In addition to making discoveries in the lab, she actively builds and maintains research collaborations with scientists and doctors from both local and international institutions, hospitals, and organisations. Personally, she enjoys communicating with students and believes firmly in the power of communication. She wishes to help the younger minds to explore their interests in biomedical research and work together to make the world a better place for future generations.

Associate Professor Dr Wu Yuan Seng

Dr Wu graduated with first class and Vice Chancellor Award for his Bachelor’s degree. He then completed his PhD in Cancer Pharmacology and Therapeutics at the Department of Pharmacology, Faculty of Medicine, University of Malaya. He was then completed his short-term research fellow in cancer research at the School of Pharmacy, Monash University Malaysia in collaboration with the School of Bioscience, University of Nottingham Malaysia. He is now joining the Department of Biomedical Sciences, School of Medical and Life Sciences, Sunway University. His research interests lie in searching for potential anticancer and antiviral agents and understanding their associated molecular mechanism(s), as well as developing efficient drug delivery or targeting system to cancer cells or virus-infected cells.

Dr Amar Daud Iskandar Abdullah

Dr Amar Daud Iskandar Abdullah is a neuroscientist by training. He recently joined the Department of Biological Sciences, School of Medical and Life Sciences of ������as a Senior Lecturer (January 2022). He is also the Programme Leader for the BSc (Hons) in Biology with Psychology program.

Dr Amar completed his Bachelor's degree in Biotechnology from the University of Malaya in 2011. Following this, he was offered a full scholarship from Korea University, South Korea to pursue his Master’s degree which he graduated top of his class in 2013. He was then offered the prestigious Melbourne International Research Scholarship (MIRS) and Melbourne International Fee Remission Scholarship (MIRFS) from the University of Melbourne, Australia to pursue his Ph.D. which he completed in the Neuropharmacology lab in December 2018 under the supervision of Prof. Peter J. Crack and Dr Juliet M. Taylor. Dr Amar was the first to discover a role for a protein called STING in modulating the outcome of traumatic brain injury. Dr. Amar conducted his post-doctoral training at the same laboratory until 2021.

Dr Amar was also the recipient of the prestigious Brain Foundation Award conferred by Brain Foundation Australia in 2019. He also held a position as one of the co-chairs of the School of Biomedical Sciences Early-Mid Career Researcher Association (SBS-EMCRA) at the University of Melbourne in 2021. Dr Amar is passionate about all things neuroscience and hopes to contribute to the education of future scientists through nurturing, healthy, and collaborative environment. Dr Ang Mia Yang

Dr Ang Mia Yang is a researcher and educator specializing in clinical bioinformatics. His academic trajectory has been supported by competitive government funding, notably the MEXT Scholarship from the Japanese government for his doctoral training at The University of Tokyo, and a JPA scholarship for his local studies in Malaysia.

His research focuses on the transition toward data-driven precision medicine by integrating multi-omics data with machine learning to identify specific genetic and environmental markers of health. Through various research collaborations, he performs advanced bioinformatics analyses to map complex biological landscapes, such as the genetic drivers of obesity to pinpoint potential causal genes and therapeutic targets.

Another core component of his expertise lies in microbial genomics and the development of specialized bioinformatic tools designed to facilitate research. He co-developed the AMRColab platform, a tool for antimicrobial resistance surveillance supported by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation via PHA4GE. He also co-developed several tools for microbial genome analysis, including FusoBase and MycoBase, which provide the scientific community with accessible infrastructure for comparative genomics.

His technical background is further supported by experience in managing High-Performance Computing (HPC) environments and building reproducible bioinformatic pipelines. Dr Yang's professional work spans academia, government-linked scientific initiatives, and industry. He is an Affiliate Member of the Young Scientist Network - Academy of Sciences Malaysia (YSN-ASM) and serves as a Key Opinion Leader (KOL) in Bioinformatics, AI, and Machine Learning for the private sector.

His professional footprint includes ongoing international collaborations, particularly with partners in Japan, China, Indonesia, the Philippines, and the UAE. In his teaching role, Dr Yang utilizes hands-on, project-based learning to prepare the next generation of biomedical scientists. His approach emphasizes the practical application of industry-standard computational tools and the development of systematic analytical frameworks, ensuring that students are prepared to navigate the evolving demands of the global life sciences landscape.

Dr Hazel Yean Ru Ann

Dr Hazel is a lecturer in the Department of Biomedical Sciences at the Sir Jeffrey Cheah Sunway Medical School with expertise in evolutionary genomics, biostatistics, and bioinformatics. Her research centres on zoonotic spillover and genomic epidemiology of infectious diseases. She previously served as INGSA-Asia (International Network for Governmental Science Advice Asia chapter) representative in a collaborative initiative with the U.S. National Academies of Science, Engineering, and Medicine (NASEM), addressing the prevention of high-consequence pathogen spillover through science-policy engagement. Her current research integrates genomic surveillance, data analytics, and cross-species comparative studies to support public health strategies and strengthen outbreak preparedness in the region.

Dr Lau Tze Pheng

Dr Lau PhD research focused on the involvement of low-penetrance genes in colorectal cancer, as well as the characterisation of stage-specific gene expression and proteomic profiles of colorectal tumours among the Malaysian cohort. Thereafter, her research expanded into the study of telomere length and telomerase activity, as well as microsatellite instability status of colorectal tumours during her postgraduate research fellowship. She started her early profession as one of the pioneers in setting up a medical testing laboratory focusing on molecular testing in cancers. She have great research interest in molecular oncology, molecular pathology and molecular diagnostics, especially on solid tumour malignancies.

Dr Lim Hui Xuan

Dr Lim Hui Xuan is Senior Lecturer at Department of Biomedical Sciences, Sunway University. She has performed various laboratory experiments related to immune cells culture. During her postgraduate study at Korea University, she researched on the role of cytokines in cancer Immunotherapy, specifically on the differentiation and immunosuppressive activity of myeloid-derived suppressor cells. Dr Lim is currently studying the immunogenicity of mutated live-attenuated vaccines against enterovirus 71 (EV-A71).
