SANDscape Design Week 2026: A different approach in design education

SANDscape Design Week 2026

Pedagogical Vision & Structural Rationale

While conventional classroom settings are paused for the duration, this period represents one of the academic year's most intensive Teaching and Learning phases. Moving beyond formal briefs and scheduled tutorials, students from across our diverse programmes, including Architecture, Interior Architecture, Design Communication, Visual Media Design, and Interior Design, are empowered to curate their own journey through an immersive selection of workshops, industry talks, screenings, and specialized lecture series.

The design week replaces part of the timetable and does not sit on it. Instead of learning with the students from their own cohort, they will be connecting with others from different cohorts and across different programmes. This conscious restructuring dissolves the traditional studio silos that frequently separate spatial disciplines from visual and narrative fields. By suspending routine assessments and formal grading pressures, learners gain the agency to test ideas horizontally across discipline lines. When a senior interior designer collaborates alongside a first-year visual media student, studio hierarchies yield to a shared atmosphere of inquiry, peer-led critique, and genuine creative exchange.

Thematic Direction: "More Than Data"

Amidst a landscape increasingly defined by algorithms and artificial intelligence, the theme "More Than Data" challenges us to peer past mere metrics and predictive patterns. It encourages an exploration of the profound human, cultural, and ethical narratives interwoven within every data point. This edition features a heightened focus on tactile, experiential workshops designed to let participants physically engage with these concepts. Such sessions underscore that information truly resonates only when scrutinized, translated, and felt through the uniquely human perspective.

In practice, this means challenging purely computational outcomes through sensory material exploration, physical prototyping, and localized field inquiry. Participants confront the subjective origins of raw information; asking who collects it, who is excluded, and what community histories remain uncounted by standard analytical models. Data ceases to be an abstract, neutral asset; it emerges instead as a living, politically charged artifact that demands aesthetic and critical interrogation.

Theoretical Grounding & Community of Practice

SANDscape is grounded in social constructivism. Following Vygotsky, we take seriously that knowledge is constructed through social interaction, and that a learner's growth depends on encounters with more knowledgeable others who can scaffold understanding just beyond what the learner could reach alone. Lave and Wenger鈥檚 account of situated learning extends this: real expertise develops through legitimate participation in a community of practice.

By inviting external creative practitioners, industry veterans, and researchers directly into this collective working space, the event shifts professional practice from an abstract destination into an active, shared reality. Students observe, debate, and co-produce alongside seasoned mentors, absorbing implicit habits of mind, technical fluency, and professional intuition that formal syllabi rarely communicate.

Institutional Context & Impact

Design education in the region is still, in many places, structured around technical delivery within a fixed studio-and-lecture rhythm. SANDscape is our attempt to make room for what that rhythm can under-serve: judgement, voice, ethical positioning, and the ability to hold a conversation with practice as it actually is. It is not a replacement for the semester; it is pedagogical infrastructure that lets the semester breathe.
